FAQs
Can the tiles be grouted into a tile installation?
Yes, our tiles are standard 12x12 stone tiles and can be grouted into a tile installation. All the tiles are sealed, but we do not recommend installing it behind the kitchen stove, or anywhere it would catch oil or food stains. Bathrooms are safe. Let us know if you are planning to install our artwork in a tile installation and we will ship it without the wood backing that we use for hanging.
What is the custom design process?
If you had a different design or project in mind that was not available in our current made to order designs, we are happy to work with you on a custom order. If the design you had in mind fits our aesthetic, we will come up with a drawing for your approval. We charge approximately 10-15% of the total cost of the project for design time.
We also consult with you which stone color will complement your design or project. See stone colors and sizes available. Once we settle on a design, color, and timeline we will request a deposit of 50% before production begins. Since drawing is a timely process, we do not do custom orders for less than $1,500. If you are not satisfied with the piece upon completion, you can apply your deposit as a credit to another piece.
We love helping you integrate your design into your home or public space.
How do I hang it?
Each 12”x36” panel hangs from an easy to use cleat system. Each panel weighs 17 pounds, and our cleat system holds 60 pounds on drywall or a stud. We provide the hardware and instructions with your product. Click here for an instructional video. We recommend a ½” to 1” gap in between panels, depending on how much room you have to view it.
How much does you artwork weigh?
Each 12”x12” tile weighs 5-6 pounds. We usually join 3 tiles together to form a panel, which weighs 17 pounds. Our cleat system on the back of each panel is weighted for 60 pounds.
Stone Color Samples
Below are the colors of marble, granite, and limestone tiles that we carry. Each artpiece is a unique combination of stones that are over a million years old, therefore color may vary. We will always send you pictures of the current stone we will use for your piece.
If needed, completely carved 4”x4” samples can be ordered for $20 each (click on image to upload color samples)..
Following are popular color combinations of the above stone colors. We usually join three tiles colors to make a 12” x 36” panel. If you prefer, we can also join three tiles of the same color (click on image to upload recommended color combinations).
What sizes are available?
Each stone tile we work with is a true 12”x12” and 3/8” thick and weighs 5-6 pounds. We work in foot increments to expand the size. We typically mount 3 tiles together onto a sealed wood backing which hangs from a cleat, making what we refer to as a panel. These are 12”x36”, horizontal or vertical, depending on the design. We can also add another tile on the bottom to make it 12”x 48”.
Tile configurations:
(Measurements do not include the gap between panels, which we typically recommend to be ½” to 1” between each panel.)
Where can I display your artwork?
Our panels can pretty much hang anywhere! The only place we don’t recommend it is behind a kitchen stove or anywhere it would be susceptible to food stains or oil. Even though they are sealed for protection, oil may darken the sandblasted areas.
It is great in bathroom spaces, as humidity wouldn’t hurt it.
You can hang our artwork outside, preferably vertically on a wall, so it doesn’t pool any water and freeze. The stone is joined with wood on the back, which is varnished twice. If you hang it outside, you may need to give it an extra coat of water-based polyurethane after 5 years or so, depending on the weather conditions in your area.
About 10% of our artwork is multi media, with Japanese paper added to the top of the stone. The paper is sealed, and is not recommended to be directly in the elements outside, but is safe on a covered porch. By special request, I can make the piece without paper, and substitute with stained glass, if it works for the piece.
Lighting: Since our artwork is in low-relief, it looks exceptionally dramatic with spotlights. Natural sunlight will also show off the carving. If you are hanging the artwork in a darker place with no lighting, we would recommend choosing marble over granite, as it tends to be brighter.
What is the '“Made-to-Order” process?
Thank you for your interest in a Made to Order art piece! Each piece is made by the artist’s hands, carving hand selected marble or granite tiles.
You can choose from any of our current designs. If you were interested in a completely new design, please see our Custom Design Process.
From our selection of made to order designs, you may choose a different size see Sizes Available. We will also consult with you on stone colors available and which stones best suits your design. See Stone Colors.
Our timeline is generally 6-12 weeks, depending on the artpiece or our waitlist. We will quote a realistic timeframe when we consult with you
If you liked the piece the way it is pictured, we will still send you pictures of the stone we have in stock before we make it. We do this because each stone is a natural material and may vary. We will request a 50% deposit at this time. Once we are finished, we will ask for the remaining 50% and then ship it to you (free shipping!) All hanging hardware is provided with instructions.
If you liked a certain design, but wanted it in a different size, we will send you a picture of the altered drawing for your approval. We may charge for additional design time, depending on the complexities of the changes involved. We will always quote this charge up front.
If you are not satisfied with the piece upon completion, you may apply your deposit as a credit.
We look forward to working with you!
What is a “Limited Series”?
While the composition may be the same in our “limited series”, each piece is create by hand using a unique combination of stones and mixed media. The finite availability of certain stones, combined with the natural variances of each stone used, makes each piece unique. Each design is of limited quantity, but without a predetermined edition number. Occasionally, our pieces are also “one-of-a-kind” designs, but command a higher price point.
